Technical Standards work for education is important but not well articulated and understood. It is therefore hard to get funded on an open rational basis. Australia as a small country needs to engage in global standards work to ensure its needs are met in specifications. At the same time this global engagement needs to be matched with full community engagement ( i.e. technical education community). The Digital Education Revolution ( DER) provides a case study for reflections.

As it moves on to an expanded, established and sustainable service it faces more challenges. Nevertheless LORN is changing the landscape in terms of learning resource access and development. It provides valuable lessons and digital architecture design examples for other education sectors. It is also a great example of the value of using a standards based approach.
